Best Buy at the Forum

From Peachtree Corners

According to sidebar in a recent Gwinnett Daily Post (http://www.gwinnettdailypost.com/index.php?s=&url_channel_id=35&url_article_id=16783&url_subchannel_id=&change_well_id=2) article, Best Buy may be building a 30,000 square foot store and 200 space parking deck in place of some of the existing parking lot of The Forum.

This has now been confirmed (7/06). Initial Site plans and a "fly through" have been posted by the UPCCA. If you would like your opinion to be heard, please email Wayne Knox at the UPCCA at wayne@upcca.com (mailto:wayne@upcca.com)

Notes from the Land Use Meeting on 7/25/06

(contributed by Rhonda Levan)

  • The store will be 30,500 square feet and the tenant will be Best Buy. A typical Best Buy “big-box” store has about 45,000 to 50.000 square feet.
  • This will not be a stand-alone Magnolia Store, but rather a Best Buy with a Magnolia Store (high-end stereo and home theater) taking-up about 5,000 square feet.
  • The merchandise mix will include large appliances, stereo installation and other items typically found in a Best Buy store
  • The plan includes a parking deck (l level above a main level)
  • The buildings will have the same building elements and landscaping as the rest of The Forum.
  • All rooftop equipment will be shielded from view.
  • Construction will begin after the holidays and will take 5-6 months.

A large crowd was at the YMCA with the majority of folks concerned that Best Buy does not “fit” at the Forum. The owners of the Forum said that this is the new model in retail with different types/levels of retail co-existing in the same center. The owners said that they understood the community’s concern but feel that projects in other centers (such as one in Peachtree City) show that Best Buy will not be a “negative”.

The planning commission will be involved because there is a change in the site plan. The planning commission can dictate requirements regarding signage, parking deck requirements, traffic flow, etc. However, The Forum’s plans do not need to be approved by the Board of Commissioners.
